If you’ve ever wandered down 1st Street in New Glarus on a crisp Wisconsin morning, you may have noticed something in the air—something warm, buttery, and just a little bit magical. It drifts out our front door before the sun is fully up, winding its way through our little Swiss-American town like an old friend inviting you in.
That’s the heart of New Glarus Bakery, a place that has been part of this community’s daily rhythm since 1910. To step inside is to step into more than a bakery. It’s stepping into over a century of stories, traditions, and hand-crafted goodness lovingly carried forward—one loaf, one pastry, one cookie at a time.
A Heritage Kneaded Into Every Loaf
New Glarus, often called America’s Little Switzerland, was founded by Swiss immigrants in 1845—hardworking weavers and farmers who brought their recipes, customs, and warm sense of community with them. Just a few decades later, our bakery opened its doors, mixing those traditions with the comforts of American baking.
For generations, families have come to us for the same treats their grandparents enjoyed—rustic breads, delicate pastries, soft cookies, and the kinds of cakes that turn an ordinary day into a celebration. Our Old World recipes are still here, and so is the care that goes into making each one.
Handcrafted dough.
Real butter.
Warm ovens.
No shortcuts.
Just the way our Swiss founders intended.
A Bakery With a Beating Heart
Since 2004, New Glarus Bakery has been lovingly stewarded by Angela Neff, who has kept the traditions alive while guiding the bakery into a new era. Under her care, we still do things the “long way”—because that’s the way that tastes best.
But Angela has also made our little bakery more accessible than ever before. With nationwide shipping, customers near and far can enjoy the same Stollen, cookies, and breads that locals have treasured for decades. Whether you live down the block or across the country, you can still open a box and be greeted by the familiar scent of a New Glarus classic.
Where Every Bite Feels Like Home
Walk through our doors and you’ll notice something right away: the bakery feels a bit like stepping into your grandmother’s kitchen. Not because of anything fancy, but because everything is warm, simple, and made with love.
The shelves are filled with golden breads and handmade pastries.
The cases sparkle with Swiss specialties and American favorites.
And behind the counter, our team moves with the kind of practiced gentleness that only comes from years of doing things by hand.
You don’t just “pick up a donut” here.
You pick up a small piece of history—wrapped in butter, sugar, and the kind of care that’s hard to find anymore.
Our Small Town Matters
Being in New Glarus shapes everything we do. Our community celebrates together, eats together, and gathers around the table the way families always have. When you taste our Herbed Sourdough, our Sandbissen cookies, or our beloved Stollen, you’re tasting 125+ years of Swiss-American heritage carried forward with pride.
Here, we believe that tradition doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be kept alive—one recipe, one customer, one warm “hello” at a time.
A Slice of Something Special
Whether you’re visiting for Winterfest, passing through for a day trip, or ordering a little box of comfort to your front door, we hope every bite reminds you of simpler joys:
The smell of a fresh loaf.
The sound of a bell above the bakery door.
The feeling of being welcomed just as you are.
That is the anatomy of our small-town Swiss bakery—simple, heartfelt, and baked with love for more than a century.
And we can’t wait to share it with you.
